How incredibly well-written. I feel lucky to have stumbled across this. Sometimes we try so hard to be timeless we forget the value of being a product of our time—you captured the sentiment perfectly.
Completely agree with you about “ahead of its time” (or the inverse, criticizing something as dated). For me, part of the joy of any artwork, etc. is the imaginative travel to the time and place it came from.
I'm sure that you've been in a museum and seen a painting or a sculpture or some artifact and really had your imagination catalyzed -- imagined what that world might have been like. That's an important part of the aesthetic experience.
This was such an incredible read. Perhaps the most timeless part is this conversation as a whole - maybe this topic of aging gracefully is with us for eternity?
Thanks so much! I’ve been thinking a lot about “ahead of its time” because it’s kind of a backhanded compliment haha it means a project was lowkey cultural obtuse when it came out!

thank you so much for the kind words 🙏🏿
planning to age in a “feral bog witch” kind of way (positive)
This was written with such clarity and elegance. What a delightful read - and one I will be thinking about as I consider my own age
thank you so much for the kind words. i wrote something that i would be happy to return to each birthday, i'm glad to hear it resonated with you :)

Time travel! That’s a lovely way to put it. And things move so quickly now, everything is “dated” the next day!
It is like time travel.

Acceptance. That is the key to aging gracefully. Don't try to be what you're not. Don't hate on the younglings because you used to be like them.
Just Accept.

BTW, thank you for calling out “ahead of its time” as lazy. I never knew why the phrase sat poorly with me but that’s exactly why!
