To be clear, absolutely no one asked for this.
To save myself from the faux-influencer ‘a lot of you have been asking about my skin care routine’ soundbite, this is completely self-ordained. Access to my unbridled takes is something many of you would actively wish to receive less of. It’s something that, at times, I want to unsubscribe from. But, sometimes, you can’t always get what you want. And other times, what you never asked for is exactly what you need. To be determined if LOOSEY lives up to the latter.
What is a ‘LOOSEY’ anyways?
After polling a significant number of pals, I feel as though it is best to start with a definition and, then naturally, offer my own:
lou-see, noun.
a single cigarette, sold individually at your bodega.
a song not included as part of an official album, often uploaded to the internet for download.
a newsletter containing a collection of fleeting thoughts housed in a single, brief essay by yours truly.
Subscribing to LOOSEY can replenish your depleted serotonin. You can expect a brief essay, interview, review and/or listicle (lol) in your inbox every other week. Content will be a coherent mix of cultural criticism, musings on technology and reflections on humanity with a hint of personal narrative. Nothing too ‘tell-all’ though, I’ll save that for my therapist and group texts. As the name suggests, these will be one-offs, not tied to a greater theme. Standalone and quick hitter like a sketchy pre-roll from the bodega. Brief but biting like Rihanna’s 2015 loosey FourFiveSeconds that led to her critically acclaimed ANTI era.
What to expect when you… weren’t expecting this at all.
You can expect the first newsletter to drop next week for Valentine’s Day and the theme of the essay will be… 🥰 all about love 🥰.
After that, expect a semi-occasional drip that contains thinking on the Edward Hopper exhibit at The Whitney, mercury retrograde and the latest Gen Z pop sensation, what the outfits you wear communicate to your therapist, the ethics of lying to those you love and an analysis of an unreleased Stevie Nicks performance, to name a few.
Still need convincing? Bet. For a taste of my writing, Google Me, Baby. You can find my writing all over the place but here are a few of my (recent) greatest hits:
on the strength and strain of representation in reality television in Electric Lit
on memory technology and the erosion of nostalgia in The Globe and Mail
on group chats in 3:AM Magazine
on the malleability of identity and race across geographies in Lolwe
on our migration to the metaverse in shado
on my new approach to resolutions in The Globe and Mail
and a few art/music/theatre reviews in The Drift!
“Don’t forget to like and subscribe!”
If any of these tickle your fancy, please subscribe to LOOSEY and share it with those you love, those you hate, those who are literate and illiterate (I promise to include pictures).
